Dog rescued by lifeguards after chasing gull out to sea at Welsh beach

Lifeguards had to rescue a dog from the sea at a Welsh beach after he chased a seagull into the water.

Chunky, a Hungarian Vizsla, was spotted by RNLI lifeguards at Newgale beach, in Pembrokeshire, as he paddled out to see chasing the bird.

Lifeguard Oli Blakiston spotted two dogs paddling out to see at around 10.15am this morning, at which point his colleague Sam Ellison paddled out on a rescue board in a bid to persuade the two animals to return to shore.
Chunky the dog

While one swam back unassisted, Chunky had to be dragged onto the rescue board after getting into difficulties around 300m from shore.

Owners Richard and Val Douney, were visiting the area from Maidenhead, said: “We thought we had a dead dog.

“He’s used to catching birds so he’d thought he’d be able to catch it.

“We thought we’d lost him.’

RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor, Stuart Penfold said: “People are very attached to their pets, and usually they are considered as part of the family.

“I’m glad the RNLI lifeguards spotted the dogs and were able to assist the animals before the owners attempted the rescue themselves.

“We hope that Chunky and his friend will think twice in future before chasing any more seagulls!”

There’s a video of him crossing the finishing line and receiving his medal on the msnbc page/youtube. He looks so confused! A bit bothersome that nobody decided to catch him, it’s very lucky that he made it home on his own the next morning.

Steven absolutely panics if his feet aren’t able to touch the ground when he’s swimming. He’s had to be rescued several times. Although not by a professional lifeguard!
